A 1945 Code of Ethics for Theatre

by Kathleen Freeman from Circle Players Theatre (with Charlie Chaplin among its backers)

1. I shall never miss a performance.
2. I shall play every performance with energy, enthusiasm and to the best of my ability regardless of size of audience, personal illness, bad weather, accident, or even death in my family.
3. I shall forego all social activities which interfere with rehearsals or any other scheduled work at the theatre, and I shall always be on time.
4. I shall never make a curtain late by my failure to be ready on time.
5. I shall never miss an entrance.
6. I shall never leave the theatre building or the stage area until I have completed my performance, unless I am specifically excused by the stage manager; curtain calls are a part of the show.
7. I shall not let the comments of friends, relatives or critics change any phase of my work without proper consultation; I shall not change lines, business, lights, properties, settings or costumes or any phase of the production without consultation with and permission of my director or producer or their agents, and I shall inform all people concerned.
8. I shall forego the gratification of my ego for the demands of the play.
9. I shall remember my business is to create illusion; therefore, I shall not break the illusion by appearing in costume and makeup off-stage or outside the theatre.
10. I shall accept my director’s and producer’s advice and counsel in the spirit in which it is given, for they can see the production as a whole and my work from the front.
11. I shall never “put on an act” while viewing other artists’ work as a member of an audience, nor shall I make caustic criticism from jealousy or for the sake of being smart.
12. I shall respect the play and the playwright and, remembering that “a work of art is not a work of art until it is finished,” I shall not condemn a play while it is in rehearsal.
13. I shall not spread rumor or gossip which is malicious and tends to reflect discredit on my show, the theatre, or any personnel connected with them-either to people inside or outside the group.
14. Since I respect the theatre in which I work, I shall do my best to keep it looking clean, orderly and attractive regardless of whether I am specifically assigned to such work or not.
15. I shall handle stage properties and costumes with care for I know they are part of the tools of my trade and are a vital part of the physical production.
16. I shall follow rules of courtesy, deportment and common decency applicable in all walks of life (and especially in a business in close contact with the public) when I am in the theatre, and I shall observe the rules and regulations of any specific theatre where I work.
17. I shall never lose my enthusiasm for theatre because of disappointments.

This is a manifesto.

SHAKESPEARE İS NOT BORİNG!!!
This idea has been unconsciously inherited, contracted by people who never watch or read Shakespeare because they heard “it is boring” and unfortunatelly they will forward it to their succesors.
İt goes so far that todays in a school book the name of Shakespeare is associated with a bored face!
The perpetuation of this idea must stop!
SHAKESPEARE İS NOT BORİNG!
Can be difficult to read, yes but Shakespeare didn’t write for reading (he would be a novelist) .
Shakespeare wrote THEATRE. Theatre is representation.
Can be hard to understand, yes but if you go to theatre and you come back more confused is not Shakespeare’s fault. The approaching of the text can be boring or confused or hard to understand (in the name of the art).
Shakespeare wrote for everybody from the poorest up to the Queen.
Shakespeare must go back to people because Shakespeare belongs to people!
We are artists and we don’t want to speak against theatre as an art against the way artists are expressing themselves. We don’t want to educate the public even.
We want to discover and rediscover tools which will bring people closer to this huge source of knowledge because
Shakespeare is life!
SHAKESPEARE İS A WAY OF BEİNG TOGETHER !

Join us!

The project "POWERED BY SHAKESPEARE" is going on.
We Will bring an incontestable gift named Shakespeare .
İt is for people of İstanbul (and not only).
We Will study the whole opera of Great Will and we Will share it with You, the Big Public.
We are searching for methods to bring Shakespeare directly to people, to convince them that he has the knowledge of life, of today's life, that Hamlet is walking on İstanbul's streets, that our society continue to produce Romeos and Juliets, that Richard III is talking for us at TV.
Do you think Katarina is in every woman, more or less adicted to traditional conventions?
Or Othello? Can be one of you? We read in the newspapers...
Did it ever happened to you to believe in fairies?
Which is the border between dream and reality?
Here is a direct conexion between You and Shakespeare, between you and life.
WE are making it.
We have been started already.
The people who have seen "Shakespeare'in Gücündendir" understand.
This was just the first step.
We are going on.
We are powered by Shakespeare.

Special thanks to ATTİLA KILIÇ for his hospitality and great kindness . Without him we couldn't make this huge step, the first one.

almost all about Macbeth here

After Gazza events it's understood one more time that for the humanity is very hard to get out from the as called “spiral of the history”.When is about power, nothing else have been changed in the world, beggining with Cain and Abel till todays, but the “actors” and maybe the tools they use to get it.

Konumuz tiyatro ve büyük usta Shakespeare olunca, onun operasının evrenselliği hiç değişime uğramadı. Belki tarihin belli bölümlerinde diğer zamanlara kıyasla daha güncel kabul edilmiş olabilir. When is about theatre and its greatest master, William Shakespeare, nothing changed in the universality of his opera maybe just that he is considered more contemporary with some periods of history than with others.

Three jesters are performing Shakespeare’s dramas. They have choose Shakespeare’s words to tell a story about power. How different they read the text? How much irony they can give to these stories and to the characters? İs it theater so strong to absorb them in? Can they make us forget, together with them, even for few minutes, that we are at theater? And after that, can they make us smile because of the theatrality of intrigants? How funny is the history when it repeats itself? How ridiculous is the mortal human being running for power? How sad it is the fact that the most inteligent creature in the world waste its little time of life …?
Üç soytarı Shakespeare’in dramlarını canlandırıyor. Gücü anlatmak için Shakespeare’in sözcüklerini seçiyorlar.

“I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being.”

Oscar Wilde

“The actor should be able to create the universe in the palm of his hand.”

Sir Laurence Olivier

“I don't know what is better than the work that is given to the actor - to teach the human heart the knowledge of itself.”

Sir Laurence Olivier

“I should be soaring away with my head tilted slightly toward the gods, feeding on the caviar of Shakespeare. An actor must act.”

Sir Laurence Olivier

These our actors,
As I foretold you, were all spirits, and
Are melted into air, into thin air;
And, like the baseless fabric of this vision,
The cloud-capped towers, the gorgeous palaces,
The solemn temples, the great globe itself,
Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve;
And, like this insubstantial pageant faded,
Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff
As dreams are made on, and our little life
Is rounded with a sleep.

Oscar Wilde

Duncan’la birlikte uykuyu yani iç huzurunu kaybeden Macbeth’i bu seferde tahtı Banqouo’nun soyuna kaptıracağı endişesi sarar. Tuttuğu katiller Banqouo’yu çağırdığı şölende öldürür ama oğlu Fleance kaçıp kurtulur. Macbeth artık etrafında sevgi, dostluk ve sadakatin aksine ona korkudan saygı gösteren; kendisinden nefret eden bir insan yığını olduğunun farkındadır. Yazgısını öğrenmek üzere tekrar cadılara başvurur. Cadılar, Macduff’dan sakınmasını, kadından doğmuş hiçbir erkeğin onu yenemeyeceğini ve Birnam Ormanı Dunsinane Tepesi’ne ilerlemedikçe korkmaması gerektğini bildirir. Macduff’ın İngiltere’ye giderek Kral Duncan’ın oğlu Malcolm’la birleştiğini öğrenen Macbeth korkunç bir öfkeye kapılarak Macduff’ın karısını ve çocuklarını kestirir. Lady Macbeth artık uykusunda kalkıp gezinir, elindeki hayali kan lekesinden ve avucundaki kan kokusundan kurtulmaya çalışır. Ruhsal yönden zaten ölen Lady Macbeth aklını kaçırarak yaşamına son verir. Malcolm,Macduff ve askerleri Birnam Ormanı’ndan kestikleri dallarla örtünüp Dunsinane’e yürüyerek şatoyu kuşatır. Karısı ve çocuklarının intikamıyla yanıp tutuşan, annesinin karnı yarılarak dünyaya gelmiş Macduff çarpışmada mertçe savaşan Macbeth’i yener.

Oyun boyuca kralın heyacanın, davranışlarını gözler ve Cladius’un oyunun en can alıcı yerinde salonu terketmesi Hamlet’in cinayet konusundaki kuşkularını yokeder. Aynı gece annesiyle evliliği konusunda tartışan Hamlet, perdenin arkasında kendilerini dinleyen birini farkederek kılıcını perdeye saplar ve ölenin Polonius olduğu ortaya çıkar. Hamlet’in gerçekten deli olmadığını iyi bilen kral, Polonius’un ölümünü bahane ederek Hamlet’i gizli bir ölüm buyruğu ile İngiltere’ye gönderir.

Since the book “Shakespeare our contemporary “ by the polish Jan Kott has been published , theatre people haven’t stopped asking if Shakespeare is still our contemporary. Some of them answered No some of them Yes and some said he is more contemporary with ones than with the others.
Theatre is an art of the moment so, normally, the performance is contemporary with the performers. İn each performance actors are influenced by every day life and also by the public. Audience are receving the information not only as an textual one but as an emotional one too, and this is influenced by their daily life. Shakespeare is contemporary with every person in public and with each actor . Very simple. Theatre is a mirror . Shakespeare said.

We will talk about power, Shakespeare talks about it too…Nothing changed in the history when is about power, maybe just the names of the “actors” and the “tools” they have been used to take it, and unfortunetly nothing can be changed in the Spiral of the History .

“When the history is repeating the tragedy becomes comedy.”
Oscar Wilde

Shakespeare had been retold so many times, spoken through different mouths. İn English Royal Court, jesters were employered as professionals fools. Because anything they said was by definition "a jest" and "the uttering of a fool" they could speak frankly on controversial issues in a way in which anyone else would have been severely punished for. Monarchs understood the usefulness of having such a person at their side so, to some of them was given great honours at court.

Let us speak again, through the mouth of these characters, the stories so many times told.

Two Jesters, "wise enough to play the fool", have gotten on writter's table, mixing his papers.
Rebels and means they will act Shakespeare's characters, reading the stories in their own way, ironical or comical, sometimes touched by tragic feelings. Together with the third one, the servant, they can be as evil as witchies from Macbeth, because as them, they always says the unseen truth.

Their aim is to make people laugh.

The theatre is the mirror of the world, as the Master said, so if you see a surprising face in the mirror have the wisdom to laugh.

A dynamic recital for three actors who will use few different theatrical techniques like travesty, pantomime, masks.
